Practical Chemistry for CAPE was designed specifically with the Internal Assessment of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination in mind. The experiments are linked to the specific objectives identified as practical exercises in the syllabus and can form part of the learning activities to enable students to achieve the objectives of the syllabus.
The book consists of experiments from both unit one and unit two of the syllabus. The layout is straightforward and simple to allow for the smooth transition from ordinary level to advanced level. The practical activities lend themselves to the development and assessment of practical skills in the laboratory. Some planning and designing investigations are included so that students will be able to formulate hypothesis and devise ways of carrying out these investigations. Also there are some structured and objective questions to assist students in revision.
Although the experiments use readily available apparatus and materials, there are many hazards associated with chemicals and procedures. Thus, general guidelines for safety in the laboratory are included. Teachers and students should be aware of their responsibilities concerning health and safety in the laboratory and take the necessary precautions.
It is hoped that this book will be of immense value to teachers and students and aid in the success of students at CAPE chemistry.
