The Caribbean Integrated Readers series comprises seven Reading Books, with accompanying Workbooks and access to interactive digital programmes. These books are for primary school students of standards Infant 1, Infant 2 and Juniors 1 to 5. The reading material presented in each book was carefully chosen to fulfil the main objectives of the reading curriculum. An integrated approach was used to expose students to a wide range of topics, which cross over into other curriculum areas.
The reading passages are followed by exercises that will encourage students to think critically, explore language features and process the information read. The following criteria for effective reading have been interwoven into each book of the series:
* The books provide enjoyable material that children can relate to;
* They introduce linguistic and phonic concepts that are fundamental to reading skills;
* They heighten awareness of sentence structures and writing processes and continue to develop these;
* They expose students to the different genres;
* They identify the ways in which language features, such as vocabulary, imagery and structure, contribute to the meaning of the text as a whole.
