The Caribbean Integrated Readers series comprises seven Reading Books, with accompanying Workbooks and interactive DVDs. These books are for primary school students of standards Infant 1, Infant 2 and Juniors 1 to 5.
The reading material presented in each book was carefully chosen to fulfil the main objectives of the reading curriculum. An integrated approach was used to expose students to a wide range of topics, which cross over into other curriculum areas.
The reading passages are followed by exercises that will encourage students to think critically, explore language features and process the information read. The following criteria for effective reading have been interwoven into each book of the series:
* The books provide enjoyable material that children can relate to;
* They introduce linguistic and phonic concepts that are fundamental to reading skills;
* They heighten awareness of sentence structures and writing processes and continue to develop these;
* They expose students to the different genres;
* They identify the ways in which language features, such as vocabulary, imagery and structure, contribute to the meaning of the text as a whole.
Each reading book is accompanied by a Workbook and an interactive DVD (Caribbean Integrated Read Works). The Workbook contains enrichment exercises that extend the concepts explored in the Reader. The foci of the Workbooks are application and reinforcement of reading skills, and extension activities to promote thinking and reasoning. The interactive DVD is adapted to the technological capabilities of students of these age groups.
The DVD is a supplemental interactive literacy resource that is flexible enough to be used in the classroom and at home. The activities found on the DVD are designed to reinforce and integrate concepts in reading, writing and language development in real-world situations. It provides support for learners in phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and grammar.
