Mastering Vocabulary Book 5 - Common Entrance Level - belongs to a series of text - Workbooks. It measures the progress of the pupils' vocabulary attainment in the Primary school.
Like its fore-runner Book 4, this book has been carefully planned to include a wide range of items such as synonyms, antonyms, homophones; types of payments, people, buildings, occupations, figurative expressions, phrasal verbs, adjectives, adverbs, nouns, prepositions etc. this book may be used vocabulary builder and also as a means of testing.
The questions are two main types (1) word substitution items and (2) situational items. These exercises are designed to measure the pupils' word power and provides an excellent way of assessing the pupils vocabulary and use of words.
Teachers, parents and pupils should know that vocabulary and grammar are interdependent. Hence it is not sufficient to know the synonyms of words alone, but also, there is the need to know the rules of grammar and how to use words effectively and correctly. Vocabulary and grammar are interwoven so teachers cannot test one without testing the other. This is so because a word, a phrase or a clause has a range of meanings and a number of usage functions and when any of these is used in the context of a sentence it conveys only one meaning and it is used on only one limited way depending on the usage function that applies to the rules of sentence construction in that particular context.
Teachers and parents should be aware that testing items in this book concentrate on the usage of single words - one word, one meaning, one function. This should be explained clearly to the pupils who should be taught that this is not always true with the usage of words.
As a vocabulary builder there is a list of words which have appeared in the Common Entrance Examination since its introduction and up to the present day. Pupils should be encouraged to study this list and to make a serious effort to master the basic skills of writing and grammar because the mere study of words, their synonyms and antonyms, is useless without acquiring the skills of using them.
